America First Group
Nationalism takes three forms:
-International: relations among sovereign states
-Transnational: across or beyond nations, above treaties, national laws and constitutions, is an intrusion into the domestic affairs of nation states
-Supranational: above or over the nation state, focused on transferring decision making authority (sovereign state govt) from the nation state to global institutions, superior to national institutions
Irreconcilable conflict between those people and nations favoring democratic accountability v those who seek global governance. Liberal democracy will either expand or shrink. The idea and practice of a free society will either advance or retreat. America and other nation states will either continue to govern selves or be subordinated to globalism. Consent of the governed, govt of the people will survive or be relegated to history.
American founders’ core moral principles:
-National sovereignty and equality of nations
-Human Rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness
All based on Laws of Nature and Nature’s God
Democratic Representation: Sovereignty of self-governing, free people via representatives
--Anchors of national identity include:
----American Patriotism
----Religious identity (religion and liberty are allies)
National idea is necessary for liberalism and democracy to function
The “WE” of nations is the moral unity between people, based on territory, shared language, association, history and culture
Need robust self-identity and emotional attachment
Rests on two pillars of natural rights and consent of the governed
First, Founders sought a constitution to achieve system of govt with separation of powers, checks and balances, representation, federalism and limited govt, a framework neither too strong or too weak that fostered consensual govt and protected individual liberty.
Second, Founders understood need for own culture to sustain govt. A healthy sense of civic nationalism was necessary, calling for religion education and morality as needed, a conceptual whole for free govt.
Both Washington and Lincoln emphasized national unity over diversity, arguing that unity was essential to survival of liberty and self government Buzzwords:
Transnational Progressivism is a rival ideology, major competitor to liberal democracy and the nation state
In the 1960’s the high-water mark of American liberalism was the passage of the civil rights bill. Common views were anti totalitarianism, individual rights v group rights, equality of opportunity, realism over utopianism, free speech, free press. All of these have been under assault for decades.
Multiculturalism
Hard Multi-culturalists challenges liberal principles of equal citizenship for individuals, instead favors group oriented concept of citizenship. Main premise is that each group should be allowed its own perspectives, values, histories and identities, separate from dominant, Anglo white male culture. And all be considered of equal value. The three pillars of liberal democratic nation states are:
---liberalism (group rights over individual rights
---subnational group consciousness over national patriotism, and
---majority rule democracy
